Analyst Jim Fitzgerald (Sam Worthington) joins a stalled case with an unusual angle: catch the bomber not through forensics but through his words. The phrasing of the manifesto, the pet expressions, the odd punctuation — each becomes evidence. On the other side sits Ted Kaczynski (Paul Bettany), a former mathematician holed up in a Montana cabin. The series runs both threads at once: the grind of profiling work and the portrait of a man who declared war on technology.

Bettany plays Kaczynski quiet and cold rather than cartoonish, which is what makes him unsettling. The linguistic profiling method shown here later worked its way into real forensic textbooks.
