How Do You Know

James L. Brooks' romantic comedy How Do You Know (2010) is available to watch online on iFILM. Lisa is in her early thirties and has just been cut from the U.S. national softball team. The sport was her whole identity, and now she has to figure out who she is and what she actually wants.

Right then, two very different men collide in her life. Matty is a charming, shallow major-league pitcher used to women drifting in and out; Owen Wilson plays him with an easy, clueless drawl. George is a corporate executive who suddenly faces a federal investigation and watches everything fall apart at once, and Paul Rudd makes him sweetly flustered. Reese Witherspoon holds Lisa between them, unsure which man lets her feel like herself. Jack Nicholson turns up as George's cold, calculating father, casting a long shadow over his son.

This is one of Brooks' last films, and it runs noticeably longer and talkier than the usual rom-com — the characters spend a lot of time talking through love, choice and the fear of getting it wrong.
