Synopsis
Belushi (2020) is a documentary you can watch online on iFILM, tracing the short, blazing life of John Belushi — the comic so big that Saturday Night Live and Animal House barely contained him. Director R.J. Cutler builds the whole film from tapes nobody had heard before.
Those recordings come from conversations with Belushi's family, friends and collaborators, taped not long after he died in 1982 at thirty-three. Their voices do the narrating: Dan Aykroyd, Chevy Chase, Lorne Michaels, director John Landis, and his widow Judith all weigh in. Cutler skips the all-knowing narrator entirely, leaning instead on letters, Belushi's own drawings and the candor of those interviews.
What emerges isn't the wild-man caricature but the person underneath — someone who got everything he chased and couldn't find the brakes. The tagline lands hard: everyone loved him, few really knew him. Warm, honest and quietly sad, it's for anyone who grew up on The Blues Brothers and wants to know who made them.
