Synopsis
Framing Britney Spears (2021) is a documentary you can watch online on iFILM. In 74 minutes it traces how a teenage pop phenomenon of the late nineties ended up legally controlled by her own father, signing away the right to run her own life for more than a decade.
Director Samantha Stark assembles the story from archival tape, on-record interviews with former assistants and attorneys, and the fans who turned a hashtag, #FreeBritney, into a movement. Paparazzi swarming a young woman. Talk-show hosts grilling her about her body and her parenting. And a courtroom arrangement under which an adult earning millions could not even choose her own lawyer. Part of The New York Times Presents series, it arrived while Spears was still fighting in court.
The angle is reassessment rather than scandal: it takes the familiar "star meltdown" narrative, flips it over, and asks who profited. It will land for anyone who lived through that MTV era and for newcomers who found the case through the hashtag. Stream Framing Britney Spears (2021) online on iFILM.
