The Cave

The Cave (2019) — watch online on iFILM — is a Syrian documentary by Feras Fayyad, following the doctors who built a hospital underground to survive the siege of Eastern Ghouta.

Dr. Amani Ballour runs the pediatric ward while airstrikes hit above. Most of her staff are women — which brings its own friction: some patients refuse treatment from a female doctor, let alone answer to one. Fayyad (Last Men in Aleppo) doesn't reconstruct or dramatize; the camera is simply there, in the corridors, as cases arrive. The film picked up an Oscar nomination for Best Documentary Feature.
