Synopsis
Fireworks (HANA-BI, 1997) is Takeshi Kitano's crime drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Former detective Nishi is losing everything at once: his wife is dying of leukemia, his partner is paralyzed after a shootout, and a yakuza loan shark owns his debt. So Nishi decides to settle accounts on his own terms.
He robs a bank. With the cash he clears the loan, sends money to the widow of a dead colleague, and takes his wife on a quiet, final trip across Japan. Kitano cuts wordless days by the sea and in the snow hard against sudden flashes of cold violence. The title says it plainly: hana means flower, life and love; bi means fire, cruelty and death. The whole film lives in that gap.
Kitano directs, writes, stars, and even painted the canvases his disabled friend works on in the story. The film took the Golden Lion at Venice in 1997 and pushed Kitano onto the world stage. This is slow, nearly silent cinema for viewers ready for long stillness broken by brutal turns. Stream Fireworks (1997) online on iFILM.
