Sniper

Beckett has a grim reputation: his spotters tend not to come home. This run he's saddled with Richard Miller, a desk-trained marksman who has hit paper targets but never a living man. Tom Berenger plays the weary professional, all instinct and scar tissue, while a young Billy Zane is his green, by-the-book opposite. Stuck in the swamps, the two strangers learn that trust matters more than accuracy when any patch of green could hide an ambush.

The shooting is patient and tense, built on long silences before the trigger pulls and the wet heat of the tropics pressing in. The film kicked off a franchise that runs to this day, yet this first entry stays the grittiest and most grounded of the bunch.
