Synopsis
The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) is a swashbuckling classic with Errol Flynn that you can watch online on iFILM. While King Richard the Lionheart sits captive abroad after the Crusades, his brother Prince John seizes the throne and bleeds England dry with brutal taxes.
The Saxon nobleman Sir Robin of Locksley won't kneel. He vanishes into Sherwood Forest, gathers a band of outlaws and declares open war on the prince's cronies, the sneering Sir Guy of Gisbourne and the cowardly Sheriff of Nottingham. Along the way the man in Lincoln green wins the heart of Maid Marian, played by Olivia de Havilland. Basil Rathbone and Claude Rains handle the villainy, and the climactic sword duel between Robin and Gisbourne is still held up as a benchmark for screen fencing.
Directed by Michael Curtiz and William Keighley in vivid three-strip Technicolor, a real luxury for 1938, the film claimed three Academy Awards for its art direction, editing and Erich Korngold's rousing score.
