Synopsis
Fitzcarraldo (1982) is Werner Herzog's adventure drama, and you can watch online on iFILM. An Irish dreamer the locals call Fitzcarraldo wants one impossible thing: an opera house deep in the Peruvian Amazon, with Caruso singing on its stage.
He has no money for it. So Fitzcarraldo (Klaus Kinski) bets everything on reaching a stretch of untapped rubber trees that no boat can reach by the usual route. His answer is lunatic and literal: drag a three-storey riverboat up and over a jungle mountain into the next river, with ropes and the labor of local tribesmen. Claudia Cardinale plays the brothel owner who backs him when no one else will. The rapids, the heat and the forest itself give no second chances.
Herzog refused models or trickery, so a real 320-ton steamer was actually hauled over that slope, and the shoot nearly destroyed his crew. Kinski, teetering on the edge, is barely separable from the madman he plays. It's slow, hypnotic filmmaking about pure obsession, the kind that rewards anyone who loved Aguirre, the Wrath of God.
