Gary Faulkner, an unemployed ex-convict from Colorado managing kidney failure, received a divine vision instructing him to capture Osama bin Laden. So he bought a sword from a home-shopping channel and flew to Pakistan. Alone.

Nicolas Cage plays Faulkner with the kind of committed sincerity that makes the character simultaneously delusional and oddly heroic. Russell Brand appears as God. The CIA is not amused. The Pakistani locals are baffled. Bin Laden himself turns up as a character. Larry Charles gives the whole enterprise the same anarchic deadpan energy he brought to Sacha Baron Cohen's films — the joke is never quite at Gary's expense, which is the smartest move the film makes.
