About

Synopsis

Nosferatu the Vampyre (Nosferatu - Phantom der Nacht, 1979) is Werner Herzog's horror film, and you can watch online on iFILM. It's his reverent answer to Murnau's silent 1922 original: young estate agent Jonathan Harker is sent into the Carpathians to close a property sale with the strange Count Dracula.

The deal is a trap. Klaus Kinski's Count is no suave aristocrat but a gaunt, achingly lonely creature for whom eternal life is a sentence, not a gift. One glimpse of a portrait of Harker's wife Lucy draws him to Wismar, and plague travels with him — rats, coffins, empty streets, a town gone quiet before the end. Isabelle Adjani plays Lucy with an almost spectral pallor.

Herzog shot on real locations in a slow, hypnotic register, scored by Popol Vuh, turning horror into a mournful poem about death. This isn't a jump-scare picture; it's a slow, beautiful nightmare. It rewards viewers who value mood and image over shocks. Stream Nosferatu the Vampyre online on iFILM.
