Synopsis
In the Moscow Slums (Khitrovka. The Sign of Four, 2023) is a Russian historical detective adventure from Mosfilm, directed by Karen Shakhnazarov — watch it online on iFILM. Moscow, 1902: theatre director Konstantin Stanislavsky wants to study the city's criminal underworld as research for a new production, so he asks journalist Vladimir Gilyarovsky — a man who knows every face and alley in the Khitrovka slums — to take him in.
What they find is a murder. The victim is an Indian Sikh with a past that doesn't fit Khitrovka's usual crimes. Konstantin Kryukov plays Stanislavsky, Mikhail Porechenkov is Gilyarovsky; together they thread through flophouses and foggy courtyards in a story built in the mould of Conan Doyle but rooted in the strikingly real geography of pre-revolutionary Moscow.
Both heroes are actual historical figures — the screenplay imagines what might have happened when they went looking for the wrong story. Shakhnazarov, whose credits include the cult Soviet film The Courier, brings historical weight and genre momentum in equal measure. Watch In the Moscow Slums (2023) online on iFILM.
