Viktor Pelevin puts out a novel annually — each printing around a hundred thousand copies — yet has given no interviews since the early 2000s, skips all public events, and is widely rumored to no longer live in Russia. Chepel went through archives, early manuscripts and interviews with people who knew Pelevin personally. The result is less a biography and more a careful sorting of fact from accumulated legend.
