Synopsis
Volga-Volga (1938) is a Soviet musical comedy you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Grigori Alexandrov and starring Lyubov Orlova.
Pompous bureaucrat Byvalov (Igor Ilyinsky) is sure there is no talent worth sending to a national arts showcase. He is wrong. Two rival amateur troupes set out for Moscow by boat — both heading down the Volga, both convinced the other should stay home. Orlova plays Strelka, a village mail carrier whose gift for music outranks any official paperwork.
The film is widely said to have been Stalin's personal favourite, reportedly screened for him dozens of times. Alexandrov turned a propaganda brief about amateur arts into something genuinely funny, carried by Orlova's presence and a set of songs people still hum. That gap between the official subject and the actual delight on screen is exactly what kept it alive. Stream Volga-Volga (1938) online on iFILM.
