A former army major named Charles Ingram walked away from Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? with £1 million in prize money — and straight into criminal court. The series runs three threads at once: how producer Paul Smith turned a simple quiz format into a national obsession, how Charles and his wife Diana worked their way to the hot seat, and how the courtroom case against them and a man in the audience unravelled in ways no one fully anticipated.
Matthew Macfadyen and Helen McCrory play the Ingrams with controlled ambiguity — neither villains nor victims, and that uncertainty is what keeps the series honest.
