Pierre and Manon are documentary filmmakers getting by on almost nothing. Pierre starts an affair with a young intern, Elisabeth, and decides to keep both relationships without choosing. Garrel doesn't frame Pierre as a villain — the film just watches him. Stanislas Merhar plays the role without obvious guilt or malice, which is exactly what makes the character difficult to sit with.
