Synopsis
Inside Lapenko (Vnutri Lapenko, 2019) is a Russian comedy series you can watch online on iFILM. The lead is Anton Lapenko — and so is almost every other character, because he plays them all himself.
It unfolds in a blurry timeframe somewhere between the late USSR and the early nineties, shot to look like a worn VHS tape, grainy picture and muddy sound included. A nameless Engineer, the balding crooner Igor Katamaranov, a reporter, Rosa the Robot — dozens of personas, with most of the dialogue improvised on the spot. The whole thing grew out of Lapenko's short Instagram skits and turned into a genuine internet phenomenon. Irina Gorbacheva shows up in a few episodes.
The comedy works through recognition rather than punchlines: the accents, the costumes, the wallpaper, the kettle on the stove all land straight on the nostalgia of anyone who lived through that era. Short episodes, absurdity that brushes up against mockumentary, and one actor given total freedom. If you're tired of glossy sitcoms, this is a breath of something else entirely.
