Synopsis
The Paleface (1922) is a Buster Keaton silent comedy short you can watch online on iFILM — twenty-five minutes of pure slapstick from the golden age of Hollywood. Oil men are pushing a Native tribe off its land, so the chief orders his men to kill the first white face that walks into camp. That face belongs to an absent-minded butterfly hunter wandering in with a net: Keaton himself.
What follows is classic Keaton clockwork — the stone face, the precision stunts, an escape where every prop somehow turns useful. He co-directed the two-reeler with Edward F. Cline, with Virginia Fox and the hulking Joe Roberts rounding out the cast. It's short, brisk and wildly inventive, and it makes a fine first stop for anyone curious why Keaton still gets called a genius of silent film.
