Synopsis
American Anarchist (2016) is a documentary you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Charlie Siskel — a sustained on-camera conversation with William Powell, author of The Anarchist Cookbook.
Powell wrote the book in 1969 at nineteen, in the middle of the counterculture upheaval. It became one of the most notorious manuals ever published, reprinted and banned for decades without fully disappearing. By the time Siskel sat him down, Powell was sixty-five and had spent years trying to pull the book from circulation — unable to, because the rights belonged to someone else. The film isn't really about the book. It's about accountability: what does a man owe for ideas he released into the world half a century ago?
Powell died shortly after filming wrapped. That fact hangs over every answer he gives. Stream American Anarchist on iFILM.
