Synopsis
Marche à l'ombre (1984) is a French road comedy and the directorial debut of Michel Blanc — watch it online on iFILM. Two broke friends drift through Greece and France: one plays music that nobody wants to hear, the other is sunk in a permanent gloom. By the time they reach Paris they're sleeping in the Métro and sharing floor space with African immigrants in a squat.
Michel Blanc and Gérard Lanvin play the pair without any of the sentimental buddy-movie warmth the premise could invite. What holds them together is more like mutual exasperation — and the fact that neither has anywhere better to go. Then they spot Mathilde, a blonde dancer played by Sophie Duez, and both immediately decide to follow her to New York, still penniless.
Blanc keeps the film at ground level throughout: no romanticized poverty, no speeches about freedom. Just two hapless men keeping each other afloat through sheer stubbornness. It landed well with French audiences on release and holds up as a sharply observed comedy of accidental companionship. Stream Marche à l'ombre (1984) online on iFILM.
