Synopsis
Close-Knit (彼らが本気で編むときは、, 2017) is a Japanese drama you can watch online on iFILM, written and directed by Naoko Ogigami and starring Toma Ikuta. It screened in competition at the Berlin International Film Festival.
Eleven-year-old Tomo has grown up expecting to be left behind — her mother disappears for days without explanation. Arriving at her uncle Makoto's apartment, she meets Rinko: a transgender woman who fills the kitchen with warmth, knits intricate garments for community fundraisers, and treats the child's presence as entirely normal. Tomo's bewilderment slowly gives way to something she has not felt before.
Ogigami refuses to turn this into a thesis. The film is precise and quiet — a study of what makes four walls a home, told through shared meals and the patient rhythm of needles and yarn. Stream Close-Knit online on iFILM.
