About

Synopsis

Manon of the Spring (Manon des sources, 1986) is Claude Berri's French drama, available to watch online on iFILM. It closes the two-part adaptation of Marcel Pagnol's novel that began with Jean de Florette, picking up a story of land, water and a reckoning that arrives years late.

Manon was eight when her father, a gentle hunchback, worked himself to death on a dry farm, never finding the spring he was sure ran beneath it. The spring was real. César Soubeyran, known as le Papet, and his nephew Ugolin had quietly plugged it with stones to buy the land for nothing. A decade on, Manon (Emmanuelle Béart) has grown into a proud shepherdess living alone in the Provençal hills with her goats. Then she learns the truth.

Daniel Auteuil plays Ugolin, hopelessly and pathetically in love with the girl his family ruined, while Yves Montand is the patriarch whose hunger for soil turns back on him. Manon's revenge is plain and merciless: she discovers what feeds the village's water and shuts it off. Berri shot both films back to back, and the Provence landscape acts like a character of its own, all scorched slopes, cicadas and baking stone. Le Papet's final confession lands harder than any gunshot. This one rewards anyone who loves slow, classically built drama where justice comes late and costs everything.
