Synopsis
The Second Tragic Fantozzi (Il secondo tragico Fantozzi, 1976) is an Italian comedy you can watch online on iFILM. Luciano Salce directs, and Paolo Villaggio returns as Ugo Fantozzi, the eternally luckless junior accountant.
This second outing is built as a string of episodes. Fantozzi wins a trip to Monte Carlo and blows the company's cash at the tables. He opens hunting season alongside Fellini. He suffers a dinner where a countess serves her guests roasted thrushes. And every Wednesday the staff are dragged to screenings of impenetrable art cinema, a bit that produced Fantozzi's notorious outburst about Battleship Potemkin. His bosses torment him, life humiliates him, and still he trudges to the office each morning.
In Italy the Fantozzi films became a national myth of the put-upon little man; in the Soviet bloc they turned into a genuine cult. The humor is grotesque, sad and mean all at once: you laugh until it hurts, and underneath the laughter sits the gloom of a beaten-down clerk.
