Synopsis
Knockin' on Heaven's Door (1997) is a German tragicomedy you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Thomas Jahn. Two strangers, Martin and Rudi, meet in a hospital room and learn within hours that terminal cancer has left them only days to live.
They wash down the despair with tequila and settle on one last wish: to see the sea, since neither of them ever has. Still in their pajamas and thoroughly drunk, they steal the first flashy car they spot, a vintage Mercedes convertible. The catch is that it belongs to a pair of gangsters, and the trunk holds a million marks. From there it's a flat-out dash toward the coast, with mobsters and police both on their tail and the two dying men stumbling into armed robbery along the way. Til Schweiger and Jan Josef Liefers lead, with Rutger Hauer dropping in as a coolly amused crime boss.
The film became a cult favorite in Germany and well beyond, largely thanks to a closing scene on the beach that lands square in the chest without a trace of sentiment.
