Co-created by real childhood friends Nick Kroll and Andrew Goldberg, the show chronicles puberty through a pair of thirteen-year-old kids growing up in suburban New York, and it pulls absolutely no punches.

Nick and Andrew are doing their best to survive middle school while haunted by so-called Hormone Monsters — physical manifestations of every embarrassing, confusing and overwhelming impulse that puberty throws at a person. Nick Kroll voices Nick, John Mulaney voices Andrew, Maya Rudolph gives life to the girls' Hormone Monstress, and Jason Mantzoukas is the id-fuelled male counterpart. Jessi Klein, Fred Armisen, Jordan Peele and Ayo Edebiri round out a voice cast that makes every character feel lived-in rather than animated. The series tackles sex, bodies, identity, first heartbreak and shame with the kind of candour usually reserved for therapy, not Saturday-night comedy.
