About

Synopsis

I Am Not Your Negro (2017) is Raoul Peck's documentary, available to watch online on iFILM. It grows out of an unfinished manuscript by writer James Baldwin, whose words are voiced off-screen by Samuel L. Jackson.

Baldwin set out to write about three murdered friends — Medgar Evers, Malcolm X, and the preacher most people call Dr. King. Peck takes those pages and braids them with newsreels, clips of old Hollywood, advertising, and footage that runs right up to present-day protests. The result isn't a tidy history lesson. It's a sharp, first-person reckoning with how the country kept refusing to see Black citizens as equals.

The film competed for the Oscar in the feature documentary race and picked up honors on both sides of the Atlantic. Watch it for Baldwin's voice above all: the editing turns his prose into an indictment that lands as if it were written yesterday. Stream I Am Not Your Negro (2017) online on iFILM.
