Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds

Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds (2017) is a South Korean fantasy epic you can watch online on iFILM. Director Kim Yong-hwa opens with firefighter Ja-hong dying in a rescue, then drops him straight onto the threshold of the afterlife.

The rules there are strict. A soul gets 49 days to face seven trials, one for each sin: lying, betrayal, violence, sloth and the rest. Three guardians, led by Gang-rim, agree to defend Ja-hong; clear all seven courts and he reincarnates. But every tribunal drags up something he buried while alive, and back on earth his younger brother is tangled in a fate that keeps bending the verdicts above.

This was a box-office juggernaut at home that kicked off a hit franchise. The effects work plays like a theme-park ride, with rivers of fire, ice chasms and courtrooms the size of canyons, while the script keeps aiming for the tear ducts.
