Synopsis
Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo (1944) is an American war drama you can watch online on iFILM. Based on Lieutenant Ted Lawson's firsthand memoir, the film reconstructs the Doolittle Raid of April 18, 1942 — sixteen B-25 bombers launched from the deck of the USS Hornet to strike the Japanese mainland in the weeks after Pearl Harbor.
The crews knew going in that they couldn't land back on the carrier — the planes simply didn't carry enough fuel. Director Mervyn LeRoy follows Lt. Lawson (Van Johnson) from the training phase through the mission itself, a crash landing on the Chinese coast and the long struggle to return home. Spencer Tracy plays Col. Jimmy Doolittle with the kind of quiet authority the role requires. Robert Mitchum appears in an early supporting part.
The Academy Award for Best Special Effects recognised the carrier launch sequences, reconstructed with military co-operation and photographed with real B-25s. At 138 minutes the pacing is deliberate — every scene in training camp earns its place when the planes finally cross the Japanese coastline. Stream Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo (1944) online on iFILM.
