Jane Hudson was once a doted-on vaudeville child star while her sister Blanche lived in the shadows. Then it flipped: Blanche became a famous Hollywood actress and Jane faded out. Now Blanche is confined to a wheelchair after an old accident, dependent on a bitter, alcoholic Jane who turns caretaking into slow torment behind locked doors, cut off from anyone who might help.
Bette Davis and Joan Crawford play the sisters, and their real-life feud bleeds into every scene. Davis's cracked, doll-like makeup, a grown woman frozen as the little girl she used to be, became one of horror's most recognizable faces.
