Synopsis
Gomorrah (Gomorra, 2008) is Matteo Garrone's crime drama, and you can watch online on iFILM. Forget the glamour of mob movies: this is the Camorra as it runs daily life across Naples and Caserta, told through five people who barely get to choose.
An aging bagman hands out cash to families whose men are locked up. Two teenagers stumble onto a hidden weapons cache and start playing Scarface with real guns. A thirteen-year-old grocery runner leads gunmen to a neighbor and loses whatever was left of his childhood. A fresh university graduate gets pulled into the clan's toxic-waste dumping racket. And a gifted tailor moonlights for Chinese rivals, a side job that nearly gets him killed. The threads rarely meet; what links them is a single system everyone is born into.
Garrone built the film from Roberto Saviano's reporting; the author has lived under police protection ever since the book came out. There is no score telling you how to feel and no character to root for, and the handheld camera stays close, almost documentary. It took the Grand Prix at Cannes.
