Synopsis
The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992) is the musical family retelling of Dickens you can watch online on iFILM, with Jim Henson's puppets filling nearly every role. The one flesh-and-blood lead is Ebenezer Scrooge himself — and he is played, completely straight, by Michael Caine.
Scrooge despises Christmas and most people along with it. On Christmas Eve three spirits arrive — Past, Present and Yet to Come — and walk him through his own life, from a lonely boyhood to a cold and friendless old age. Kermit the Frog anchors the story as Bob Cratchit, while Gonzo, cast as Charles Dickens, narrates with the rat Rizzo heckling at his side.
Directed by Brian Henson, son of the Muppets' creator, the film pulls off a strange feat: felt-and-foam comedy sitting comfortably beside real Dickensian sorrow. Caine commits as if his co-stars weren't puppets at all, and that earnestness is exactly why it lands. Paul Williams' songs have long since become Christmas standards.
