Synopsis

Dark Water (2005) is Walter Salles' slow-burn psychological horror, and you can watch online on iFILM. Jennifer Connelly plays Dahlia, a mother in the middle of a bruising custody fight who moves with her five-year-old daughter into a grim apartment block on Roosevelt Island.

A stain of dark water keeps spreading across the ceiling, and nothing she does stops it. Footsteps sound from the floor above, her daughter picks up an unseen playmate, and Dahlia is stretched thin between court dates, a new job and a building that seems to breathe on its own. The longer it goes, the harder it is to tell whether the decaying tower is breaking her mind or something really is in the walls. John C. Reilly turns up as a slick rental agent, with Tim Roth as a weary lawyer and Pete Postlethwaite rounding out the cast.

Salles skips cheap jump scares for a heavy drama about a woman near collapse, where the dread seeps up through leaks, damp and loneliness. It's a reworking of Hideo Nakata's Japanese film, adapted from a story by Koji Suzuki of Ring fame. One for viewers who want mood-driven horror over a thrill ride.
