Sailor Moon (Seasons 1–5)

Sailor Moon (1992) is the Toei Animation anime you can watch online on iFILM. Adapted from Naoko Takeuchi's manga, it follows Usagi Tsukino, a fourteen-year-old crybaby who oversleeps, flunks her tests and trips over her own feet on the way to school.

Then a black cat named Luna, with a crescent moon on her forehead, finds Usagi and starts talking. Luna explains that the girl is a sailor-suited soldier sworn to love and justice. A brooch transforms her into Sailor Moon, and suddenly she is hunting for a lost Moon Princess and the Silver Crystal while fending off the monsters of the Dark Kingdom. Other guardians gather around her over time: clever Ami, hot-tempered Rei, powerful Makoto. And the masked stranger Tuxedo Mask shows up exactly when things look hopeless.

The series blends middle-school comedy, first crushes and monster-of-the-week battles, and in the nineties it more or less wrote the rulebook for the magical-girl genre worldwide. Kotono Mitsuishi voices Usagi, and that trademark wail became a piece of pop culture in its own right.
