Synopsis
Red Desert (Il deserto rosso, 1964) is Michelangelo Antonioni's drama you can watch online on iFILM. It was the director's first film in color, and he uses the smoking chimneys, poisoned canals and gray haze of industrial Ravenna as a mirror for a mind coming apart.
Monica Vitti stars as Giuliana, the wife of a factory engineer who cannot find her footing after a car crash. Her husband's plant roars on, every day folds into the same dread, and the one person who seems to register her pain is Corrado, a visiting businessman played by Richard Harris. They drift into an affair, but it heals nothing. Giuliana keeps moving as if feeling her way through fog.
Antonioni treated color like a painter, literally spraying grass, walls and fruit so the hues carried emotion rather than fact. This is the peak of his alienation cycle after the trilogy with Vitti, and a cornerstone of 1960s European modernism. Don't come for plot; come for mood, and for the way the industrial world drowns out the human voice. Stream Red Desert (1964) online on iFILM.
