Death Warrant

Death Warrant (1990) is a prison action thriller with Jean-Claude Van Damme that you can watch online on iFILM. Canadian cop Louis Burke goes undercover as an inmate inside Harrison State Prison with a single job: find out who keeps murdering prisoners behind those walls, and why.

On the inside, a different law applies. Burke plays the part of an ordinary convict, builds a wary alliance with a planted legal aide (Cynthia Gibb) and a cautious cellmate, and throws hands only when he's cornered. The deeper he digs, the clearer it gets that the killings point to something bigger than a few sadistic guards, and an old blood enemy known as the Sandman has already recognized the cop who put him away.

The screenplay, oddly enough, comes from a young David Goyer, who'd later write Blade and the Dark Knight trilogy. Director Deran Sarafian keeps the brawls tight in narrow corridors and skips the chatter. This is a sturdy VHS-era beat-'em-up: simple plot, snappy fights, Van Damme in peak shape.
