Seventeen-year-old Joshua "J" Cody (Finn Cole) has nowhere to go after his mother's overdose, so he moves in with the family he barely knows — his grandmother Janine, who goes by Smurf, and her three sons on a California beach. The house looks relaxed. It isn't. Smurf (Leila George) runs a criminal operation and keeps every member of the Cody clan in line with a mix of money and manipulation. Pope (Shawn Hatosy) is the oldest son and the most volatile. Craig runs on impulse, Deran (Jake Weary) wants out but can't leave. J watches, learns, and slowly realizes that survival here means becoming something he may not be able to undo.
