Theoretical physicist Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons) and his roommate Leonard Hofstadter (Johnny Galecki) are two of the smartest people in any room, and also two of the least equipped to handle everyday human interaction. That problem gets worse when Penny (Kaley Cuoco), an aspiring actress with zero interest in string theory, moves in across the hall. Aerospace engineer Howard Wolowitz (Simon Helberg) and astrophysicist Raj Koothrappali (Kunal Nayyar) round out the original four. Later seasons bring in microbiologist Bernadette (Melissa Rauch) and neuroscientist Amy Farrah Fowler (Mayim Bialik), who turns out to be Sheldon's scientific and personal match.
