American rock star Nick Rivers — a debut film role for a then-unknown Val Kilmer — flies in to perform and promptly falls for Hilary Flammond, whose father is the man in the dungeon. Nick ends up fighting alongside an underground resistance he did not know existed forty-eight hours earlier. Peter Cushing and Omar Sharif appear in cameos that are punchlines in themselves.
The film stacks sight gags, Elvis parody, mock-German military pomposity, and reverse-logic editing into ninety minutes that barely pause. Kilmer is genuinely funny — loose and committed in a way that carries the whole thing. For anyone who grew up on 1980s slapstick comedy, Top Secret! holds up as one of its sharpest entries.
