Beneath the Planet of the Apes
The bizarre world of "Planet of the Apes" was only the beginning...
Synopsis
Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970) — watch online on iFILM. Directed by Ted Post, this direct sequel to the 1968 classic picks up without missing a beat. Astronaut Brent launches a rescue mission and crash-lands in the same bleak future: Earth in the fortieth century, overrun by ape civilization.
His search for the previous crew leads underground, beneath the ruins of what used to be New York. Down there a tribe of mutant telepathic humans has built a religion around a doomsday warhead. James Franciscus carries the main arc; Charlton Heston returns to steer the ending where few studio films dared to go.
The sequel is grimmer than the original, and the climax is genuinely irreversible — no Hollywood escape hatch. For fans of early science fiction it stands as a rare example of a franchise installment that darkened the mythology rather than softened it.
