Chris Nielsen arrives in a heaven where soil, trees and sky run like wet oil paint, each brushstroke lifted from the canvases of his wife Annie (Annabella Sciorra). The peace doesn't hold. Crushed by grief, Annie takes her own life and her soul falls to hell. Chris chooses to go down after her, even though no one has ever pulled a loved one back from that pit. A mysterious guide, played by Cuba Gooding Jr., walks part of the road with him.
