Synopsis
Kung Fu Hustle (功夫, 2004) is a Hong Kong action-comedy written and directed by Stephen Chow — watch it online on iFILM. Shanghai, the 1940s. The Axe Gang owns the city. Small-time hustler Sing (Chow himself) decides joining them sounds like a plan. He is very wrong.
Sing and his partner stumble into Pigsty Alley — a slum nobody cares about — and accidentally trigger a full-scale war between the Gang and the residents. Those residents turn out to be retired kung fu legends hiding behind ordinary trades: a tailor, a coolie, a noodle vendor. The building's landlady, played by Yuen Qiu, can outrun a bus and punch through a wall. Her husband, Yuen Wah, is no different. When the Axe Gang imports a near-mythical assassin known as the Beast (Bruce Leung Siu-Lung), even the hidden masters start to sweat.
Chow shot the film for $20 million and pulled in over $100 million worldwide. It layers cartoon-physics slapstick, precise wuxia choreography, and genuine emotional stakes without any of them cancelling each other out — a combination almost nobody has managed to replicate.
