Synopsis

Excalibur (1981) is John Boorman's Arthurian fantasy that you can watch online on iFILM. A sword forged for one rightful hand passes through betrayal, lust and blood, carrying the legend from Uther Pendragon down to Arthur himself.

The blade makes Uther king, but desire ruins him: to bed another man's wife he promises his unborn son to the wizard Merlin. The boy grows up nameless until the day he draws the sword from the stone. As Arthur, played by Nigel Terry, he gathers the Knights of the Round Table and raises Camelot, only to face Guinevere, Lancelot's betrayal, the long hunt for the Holy Grail, and the sorceress Morgana scheming to rot the realm from within. Nicol Williamson plays Merlin and Helen Mirren plays Morgana. Look closely and you will spot a young Liam Neeson, Patrick Stewart, Gabriel Byrne and Ciaran Hinds in minor roles.

Boorman shoots the myth like a pagan rite: misted forests, armor glowing with green fire, and Carl Orff's "O Fortuna" thundering over the charges. This is no cozy fairy tale but a dark, sensual film about magic draining out of the world. It shaped countless fantasy films that followed and earned its cult standing. Anyone drawn to harsh, visually dense fantasy will feel right at home. Stream Excalibur (1981) online on iFILM.
