The Purge

James Sandin (Ethan Hawke) got rich selling his neighbors the very security systems meant to survive this night. His own house is a fortress of steel shutters. Then his son lets in a wounded stranger fleeing a gang of hunters, and a masked crowd gathers at the gate with a simple demand: hand the man over, or the whole family dies. Lena Headey plays the wife forced to decide what their comfort is actually worth.

DeMonaco wrapped a sharp parable about class and sanctioned violence inside a home-invasion siege. Made for roughly three million dollars, it earned back many times over and spawned a whole franchise.
