Synopsis
The Great White Hype (1996) — a sharp US sports comedy directed by Reginald Hudlin — is available to watch online on iFILM. Reverend Sultan (Samuel L. Jackson) is a boxing promoter who could sell a loss as a victory. His problem: the champion's fights aren't moving tickets anymore. His solution: find a white challenger.
The man he digs up is Terry Conklin, an ex-rocker who once beat the champ years ago and hasn't thrown a punch since. Sultan sells him as the great white hope, the media buys it wholesale, and the confident champion stops training entirely. Jeff Goldblum, Damon Wayans, John Leguizamo, Jamie Foxx and Cheech Marin round out a cast that seems to be having a very good time.
Hudlin and screenwriter Tony Hines built a satire that targets the boxing industry's willingness to package race as a marketing strategy — and they do it without letting the joke go flat. Jackson is the movie. The whole thing runs on his energy. Stream The Great White Hype (1996) online on iFILM.
