About

Synopsis

Funny Farm (1988) is an American comedy you can watch online on iFILM, directed by George Roy Hill — the same director behind Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. This time he trades outlaws for a New York sportswriter with a dream: move to rural Vermont, write a novel, breathe clean air.

Chevy Chase plays Andy Farmer, a man whose plan collapses almost immediately. The mailman drives like he's fleeing something. The neighbors are aggressively eccentric. The house has its own ideas. His wife Elizabeth, played by Madolyn Smith Osborne, tries to stay positive, but Vermont keeps finding new ways to test them both. The novel stays unwritten.

The film runs on the gap between city people's idea of country life and what country life actually delivers. Chase is well-cast as someone constitutionally unable to admit defeat, working through disaster after disaster with dwindling dignity. A gentle, easy-going comedy.
