Synopsis

The Master (2012) is Paul Thomas Anderson's drama you can watch online on iFILM. Freddie Quell comes home from the Pacific war a broken man — drinking anything he can distill, unable to hold a job or a thought.

One drunk night he sneaks aboard a yacht and wakes up under the wing of Lancaster Dodd, a silver-tongued author who has just launched a movement he calls The Cause. Dodd treats the volatile sailor as a test subject and, somehow, a son. What grows between them is hard to name. Mentor and stray dog. Believer and the man he cannot quite convert. Dodd's wife Peggy watches the newcomer with cold suspicion and tightens her grip on the faith.

Joaquin Phoenix, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams each landed an Oscar nomination for this three-way standoff. Anderson shot on rare 65mm film, which is why the postwar rooms feel so dense and tactile. Many read The Cause as a stand-in for early Scientology, though Anderson sidestepped the obvious comparison.
