Synopsis
Watch The Woman King (2022) online on iFILM — a historical action drama from director Gina Prince-Bythewood, led by Viola Davis. West Africa, the early 1800s. The kingdom of Dahomey is guarded by a fighting force made up entirely of women.
They are the Agojie. General Nanisca drills a fresh batch of recruits, among them a stubborn nineteen-year-old named Nawi (Thuso Mbedu), handed over to the palace by a father unwilling to marry her off. The training breaks most of them. Meanwhile the slave-trading Oyo Empire presses in, and a reckoning is coming. Lashana Lynch, Sheila Atim and John Boyega round out the cast.
The film grows out of the real Dahomey women warriors, whose discipline stunned European visitors. Prince-Bythewood staged the large battle sequences with the actors themselves; Davis trained for nearly a year to carry them. Stream The Woman King (2022) online on iFILM.
