Whisper of the Heart

Whisper of the Heart (耳をすませば, 1995) is a Studio Ghibli animated drama you can watch online on iFILM. Directed by Yoshifumi Kondo from a screenplay by Hayao Miyazaki, it was the only feature Kondo ever directed — he died in 1998, leaving this quiet coming-of-age story as his sole testament.

Fourteen-year-old Shizuku (voiced by Yoko Honna) lives in a Tokyo suburb and devours library books. She keeps noticing the same name on the checkout cards before hers: Seiji Amasawa. When they finally meet, Seiji (Issey Takahashi) already has a plan — travel to Italy and apprentice as a violin maker. Shizuku has no plan at all. That gap between them sends her to the desk in her grandfather's antique shop, where she starts writing her first story, starring the Baron, a porcelain cat figurine she found in a glass case.

The film runs 111 minutes and almost nothing explodes. Its version of "Take Me Home, Country Roads" opens things gently and accurately. Among Ghibli's catalog it sits apart — smaller in scale, closer to the texture of an ordinary afternoon. Stream Whisper of the Heart (1995) online on iFILM.
