Synopsis
The Poker House (2008) is an American drama you can watch online on iFILM. Director Lori Petty drew on her own adolescence in a small Iowa town to make this film. Jennifer Lawrence, 17 at the time of shooting, plays Agnes, the oldest of three sisters trying to hold things together in a house that belongs to gamblers, drug users and strangers by the time night falls.
Their mother — played by Selma Blair — has long stopped pretending she runs the place. Agnes gets her younger sisters ready, goes to school, plays basketball, keeps her mind aimed at something beyond the four walls. Chloe Grace Moretz plays one of the sisters. The single day the film covers accumulates small violences, humiliations and a few moments where ordinary kindness breaks through unexpectedly.
Petty's direction keeps the camera close and the budget invisible — this is a personal film and it feels like one. Lawrence was three years from The Hunger Games here, and already she carries scenes without needing to announce herself. Watch The Poker House (2008) online on iFILM.
