Synopsis
Maurice (1987) is James Ivory's drama from the E. M. Forster novel, and you can watch it online on iFILM. At Cambridge in the early 1900s, student Maurice Hall falls for his classmate Clive, a bond the two must keep hidden from everyone they know.
Clive is the one who pulls back. He marries, chooses career and respectability, and leaves Maurice alone with feelings that Edwardian England treated as a crime. Maurice turns to doctors hoping to be "cured," until a stay at a country estate brings him to Alec Scudder, an undergamekeeper from a different class who answers to no one's rules. James Wilby plays Maurice, Hugh Grant the guarded Clive, and Rupert Graves the gamekeeper Alec, with Ben Kingsley and Denholm Elliott in older roles.
Forster finished the book in 1914 but refused to publish it in his lifetime, its happy ending unthinkable to the censors of the day; it appeared only after his death. Ivory filmed it with quiet care, and it took the Silver Lion at Venice. Stream Maurice (1987) online on iFILM.
